What is Local Search?

A local search is conducted when someone uses a local search engine to find products or services in their specific area.  Local search sites are primarily supported by advertising from businesses that wish to be prominently featured when users search for specific products and services in specific locations.

You are most likely familiar with Google Maps.  Google Maps is a Google service offering powerful, user-friendly mapping technology and local business information – including business locations, contact information, business hours, and driving directions.

Type a location and you will see a map of that specific area.  You can switch to a satellite photo, or even see a hybrid of the two. Click the map and drag it to see adjacent sections. You can even zoom in to get a closer look.

Local search advertising can be highly effective because it allows ads to be targeted very precisely to the search terms and location provided by the user. Examples of local searches include "Key West Hotels", "Newport Beach Dentist", and "Maui Rental Cars".  If you were to type Newport Beach Dentist, Google Maps would show a list of dentists in Newport Beach.

Local search is the on-line version of the traditional off-line advertising, typically newspaper publishers, TV and radio broadcasters. Historically, consumers relied on local newspapers and local TV and radio stations to find local products and services. With the advent of the Web, consumers are increasingly using search engines to find these local products and services online. In recent years, the number of local searches online has grown rapidly while off-line information searches, such as print Yellow Page lookups, have declined. As a natural consequence of this shift in consumer behavior, local product and service providers are slowly shifting their advertising investments from traditional off-line media to local search engines.

Popular local search sites include Google Maps, Yahoo Local, MSN Local, Local.com and Ask.com.

Nearly 73% of all Americans now use the internet. Yet, only a jaw-dropping 9% of small businesses are happy with their internet marketing.  In today's economic environment you can not ignore the intenet – you need a solid internet marketing plan – it's one key element to your business growth and survival.
